If sky turns red

The memory of a frightening dream—
a vision of the dark future to come—
remained sharp within us.
Even when the memories
of the events that followed
were later buried deep.

March 24, 1999. Belgrade, late afternoon.
The media announced the possibility of a NATO attack.
The whole neighbourhood rushed to the shops for supplies. My sister and I went too. While we walked, she looked up at the sky in fear and said, "I dreamed last night that if the sky turned red today, before sunset, they would bomb us." And the sky was so, so red.
We held hands tightly. At 9 p.m., the first bombs hit Belgrade.
