Nina Sumarac, born in 1972 in Belgrade, is a Cyprus-based multidisciplinary social visual artist with a background in fine art, painting, and mechanical engineering.
Sumarac's artistic practice delves into the essence of global and bio-political narratives that shape our collective consciousness. Through a poetic and metaphorical lens, she critically examines and weaves together various social and political issues, challenging the embodiment of socially constructed stereotypes at both personal and collective levels. Her aim is to foster new ways of thinking and explore alternative perspectives.
Drawing upon her passion for engineering, fine art, and philosophy, Sumarac's current artistic evolution revolves around intermedia art. By integrating new media and technologies into diverse artistic practices, she seeks to explore healing and empowerment. She is particularly interested in investigating the complexities of human existence in the contemporary era of rapidly advancing technologies. Her work examines ideologies pertaining to personal, social, and political boundaries, as well as the intricate relationship between organic and AI organisms/algorithms, and the power dynamics emerging from these discussions.
Sumarac attended the Polytechnic University for New Technologies in New Belgrade, where she pursued studies in mechanical engineering and computer numerical control systems. She holds a BFA from Buckinghamshire New University in the United Kingdom and a Postgraduate Diploma in Fine Art from Cyprus College of Art in Larnaca.
Sumarac is a highly acclaimed artist, with a multitude of awards to her name. Her projects have been generously supported by the Ministry of Education and Culture in Cyprus, and her works have become valuable additions to the permanent collections of esteemed institutions such as the State Gallery of Contemporary Cyprus Art and the Municipal Gallery Limassol. Furthermore, her pieces have found homes in numerous private collections.
Over the course of her career, Sumarac has held ten solo exhibitions and actively participated in numerous group exhibitions and collective projects worldwide. For more than fifteen years, she has worked as a team member in experimental films and animation production, collaborating with the renowned Toonachunks animation studio.
Sumarac is also a co-founder of the Arboreal Collective, a contemporary art group. Additionally, she contributes as a team member to the Lab for Animation Research, a research centre affiliated with the Department of Fine Arts at Cyprus University of Technology.
