Nina Sumarac Jablonsky is a visual artist born in Belgrade, Yugoslavia. For the past 20 years, she has been living and working in Limassol, Cyprus. She holds a Masters degree in Mechanical engineering and a Postgraduate degree in Fine Art.

Since 2001, Nina Sumarac Jablonsky has had ten solo exhibitions. She has received awards and has participated in numerous exhibitions and competitions in Cyprus, Switzerland, England, Serbia, France, Bulgaria, Greece, Italy, New York, Korea and Berlin, and is celebrated locally and internationally as a thought-provoking artist.

Sumarac’s cultural productions take the form of paintings, drawings, photography, digital graphics and various media art. By merging several seemingly incompatible mediums, Sumarac aims to amplify the spectator’s viewing experience by creating compositions and settings that generate poetic images, which balance on the threshold of familiarity and alienation.

In her work, fiction and reality, come together, well-known tropes merge, meanings shift, past and present fuse. Time and memory take centre stage as themes and a source of inspiration. Concepts and perspectives are shaped by her transdisciplinary approach to exploring a diverse range of subjects. Her work incorporates time as well as space as a fictional and experiential universe that emerges gradually, working towards questioning historically and socially fixed identities.

Sumarac’s work responds to the surrounding environment taking everyday experiences as a point of departure to investigate nuanced representations. Often these are framed instances that would go unnoticed in their original context. By articulating them through a poetic and often metaphorical lens, she uses a visual vocabulary that pieces together a variety of social and philosophical issues within a polyphonous whole. She aims to create works that engage viewers in dynamic and interactive ways whilst questioning how we embody socially constructed stereotypes on a personal and collective plane, in a bid to develop new critical ways of thinking and being.

She is a member of E.Ka.Te, The Cyprus Chamber of Fine Art and a member of ULUPDS - The Association of Applied Arts Artists and Designers of Serbia. She has also had significant experience in film and animation production. Furthermore, Sumarac actively contributes to the island’s dynamic cultural scene, as a curator and consultant for exhibitions, workshops and symposiums.

Dr. Nadia Anaxagorou MA& MLS, Director of the Cultural Services Limassol, Cyprus

"In her work, the Serbian artist Nina Sumarac illustrates the complex imagery of subconscious visions in a neo-surrealistic manner, which is an amalgamation of symbolism, conceptual thoughts, philosophical views, fantasies and dreams. She depicts aspects of human and societal relationships through expressively distorted figures, encompassing a broad range of emotional states. She brings to the work her personal sensibilities and experiences -- often unflinchingly portraying the demons that she harbors, in the hope that by doing so she may transcend the dangers that threaten her from within ."

Tatiana Ferahian  MLS & MA

" In her painting she has real verve and flair. Her work shows an increasingly personal vision, it has emotional depth and integrity and demonstrates a good understanding of contemporary and historical practice. As an Artist she has already contributed much to the professional Art Center of Cyprus, where she is becoming increasingly recognized as an outstanding Painter of her generation."

Phil Bird MA
